The IT Workforce Bout for Relevancy

Boy, do we have an epic match for you today! In one corner, we have Robotic Process Automation (chatbots) equipped with natural language processing teamed up with machine learning and its rapidly advancing Artificial Intelligence capabilities! In corner 2 we have the traditional IT roles gunning for retirement (and hoping they make it before their job is eliminated) teamed up with those who have already had their roles eliminated by technical advancements. The referee for today’s match, the “Mighty Dollar” and the insatiable consumer demand for what they want now, with superior value, for as close to free as they can get it!
Ladies and gentlemen this metaphor is real. The once white-collar haven for a great paying job and a challenging career was IT. Roles from CIO down to a helpdesk technician could provide a comfortable life with strong demand for anyone that entered their ranks. Like anything in life, change and adaptation are required to stay relevant. Cloud-based technologies at scale are eliminating and simplifying infrastructure procurement, architecture, deployment, and maintenance. Robotic process automation, machine learning, artificial intelligence-driven business applications are eliminating service roles and jobs that are repetitive and predictable. Inside of that efficiency of scale resides hundreds of thousands of six figure jobs, that are going away. Operational roles to service customers or execute repeat tasks paying a comfortable $50-70k a year, are being automated away at a rapid clip.
Fear not. There is an opportunity-rich Modern IT world that awaits. A simple search for open jobs quickly paints an optimistic picture for IT professionals going to school, out of work, or who are hanging on for dear life. The Picasso reveals an abundance of technical demand and not enough people to fulfill it. Cloud Engineers, Data Architects, Data Scientist, Developers, IoT Engineers, Edge Compute Engineers… the list goes on and on. The opportunity at hand requires time, effort, and the perpetual pursuit of the skills required to fulfill employers’ demands! Organizations such as the Milwaukee Tech Hub, and for my fellow Veterans, the VRAP Program have an abundance of resources to assist. The University of Milwaukee has the Connected Systems Institute geared towards retooling skillsets and ensuring you get industry and technical certifications matched to market demand. The time is now. Take charge of your career and guide it in the direction you want to go. If you’re breathing and able to get yourself out of bed each day, it’s not too late. Tuatara Consulting Inc. will be here to help you light your motivational fires!
