Are Modern Data Capabilities Helping Your Business Win?

As companies continue to collect data and have teams of analysts and business users leveraging it for critical decisions, the need for a scalable data platform continues to grow. Businesses use multiple toolsets to interact with their “business” data, ranging from data warehouses to personal spreadsheet-based reports and macros. Each of these use cases provides critical insights and reporting functionality that guide companies through their day-to-day decisions and long-term strategies.
We have seen clients at different points in data maturity. One thing we consistently hear is the need for more data, faster processing, and predictive analytics. Users are downloading spreadsheets from business applications because the tool itself does not provide the views they need. These same users are doing this from multiple applications and joining the data together because the core systems do not integrate. These situations create even more segregated data within the business, which can cause a security and scale issue. Companies that run into this are not able to harness the available modern functionality to quickly process this data and surface insights. These insights can sometimes take days or weeks in the current environment to create. Processing times on this data adds up. Users are waiting hours for reports to generate, which is not only a loss in productivity for that user but delays action to attack the market or optimize an operational process.
Add on top of this the cost of the hardware required to continue to scale this on-premises. Not only does the require additional hardware in the data center, but end-user devices also need to have the processing power required to crunch these reports. Both will continue to need to be refreshed and requirements will continue to grow as the amount of data goes up and up. The downtime to perform these upgrades can crush business operations for days and sometimes up to weeks. Business does not stop, why should your operations and ability to serve customers?
The Google Cloud Platform provides the tools necessary to attack this issue and get on the path to a modern data platform. There’s a great case study about a home improvement store we all know, and how they leveraged tools like Big Query to increase their available insights while decreasing the processing time to receive it. A cool statistic this story calls out is the reduction in processing time for their different workloads, 78% or greater in all scenarios.
Harnessing the power of modern data solutions is essential for businesses as they move into the next decade. Staying in front of customer needs, forecasting inventory needs, optimizing supply chains, and continuous improvement can all be aided by these technologies. Google has created a wonderful example of how its technology stack has enabled a large home improvement store. These are no longer futuristic thoughts or a high barrier to entry projects; your company can start this journey today.
