Reflections: Starting a Company During a Pandemic

Dream Big and Go Get it!
For most of my career I have been a change agent transforming organizations from the inside out. Always wondering why happiness was so elusive. Took a personal wake up call to remind me that just because you can, does not mean you should. You only live once and sixty good years on this amazing planet is not that long of a stay. Dream big, wake up, and make those dreams your new reality.
Surround Yourself with People that Offset Your Weaknesses
Step one admit you suck at many things. Step two be OK with others being smarter, faster, better than you. Step 3 realize this actualization is a gift that provides clarity of sight in the brilliance of others around you. Welcome their talent, learn from them, reward their candor, empower them, and become their biggest fan. They will make you look good, as you do them. Teamwork endures.
Bend Don’t Break…. Never Surrender
The fifth stanza of the Ranger Creed contains, “Surrender is not a Ranger word.” This was engrained into my soul as a young Army private and represents the perseverance I carry with me to this day. Life can be hard. Starting a business is hard. Being a parent is hard. Leading people is hard. Losing people is hard. There is a lot of hard in life and hard presents us with the opportunity to learn, to grow. Be the tree, bend with the shifting winds of life, do not break. Keep your wits about you, never surrender, and let the word know you were here.
Network with Strangers, Make New Friends
I am amazed and humbled with the kindness of complete strangers and their willingness to devote time, effort, and support to me. From small business support organizations, to college Alumni, to our Veteran community. I have reached out and you have answered my calls. The selfless notion to give back, to pay it forward is an amazing thing. You are no longer strangers; you are now my friends. I will pay it forward.
Be Ok with Good Enough
Perfection is overrated and a killer of momentum. The law of diminishing returns is real. Time is a precious commodity. Prioritize what needs to be done to win, to do quality work, and kick perfection to the curb. The world isn’t going to wait, and nobody will ever know that the work that was “good enough” wasn’t perfect except you.
Fail Quickly, Forward…. Always Forward
Being a great leader who wakes up each day with an insatiable desire to change the world takes courage and the ability to embrace failure. Failure is imminent. When failure comes knocking, own it. Let those around you see and learn from it. Keep moving forward in the face of adversity. Victory awaits. Lead the way.
Be Patient, Be Thankful, Enjoy the Ride
I’ve come to grips with the fact that I’m a patience practitioner and practice does not always produce superior results. Deep breaths, knowing when to stay quiet, exercising compassion, and allowing empathy to guide the way is an art that will take a lifetime to perfect. Say thanks to those around you, always. Let them know what they mean to you in the moment, do not wait. Be vulnerable and let your guard down. Look around you, soak it in, smile……you are living your dream……enjoy the ride!
